A hanging

The world was shocked when the Nazi claimed that they were just following orders. In George Orwell's "A Hanging", an English officer plays a role in the execution of a native Burman in an English Imperial jail. A series of disruption on the way to the gallows force the English officer to consider his moral responsibilities in eliminating a life. The first occurrence involves a huge dog running around the yard, causing an interruption in the procedure. "- a dog, came goodness knows whence, had appeared in the yard… it had made a dash for the prisoner and jumping up tried to lick his face." (Orwell 28) The disturbance this dog has caused, in one way or another tempted all the spectators, including the English officer, to look at the soon to be executed prisoner.
