Subsequent to Washingtons unanimous election as the first president, American politics have been divided along party lines. During the 1790s, the Federalist party controlled the newly formed republic. ... This policy of American neutrality was continued during the presidency of John Adams. With seizure of American ships abundant, Adams refused to declare war. ... He soght to remove British troops from Northwest outposts; to gain compensation for losses suffered due to British ship seizures; and to end restrictions on American trade, especially with the British West Indies. What resulted would be considered a slap in the face by the American public. ... Jay gained no compensation for American losses, and was given to protection for American sailors against impressment. ...
American politics were greatly shaped in the 1790s by Alexander Hamiltons financial plan. ... They included the Naturalization Act, which extended the residency period from five to fourteen years for aliens seeking citizenship, aimed at immigrants who were often active in Republican politics; the Alien act, which allowed the expulsion of aliens deemed dangerous during peacetime; the Alien Enmities act, whic allowed for the expulsion or imprisonment of aliens deemed dangreous during wartime; and the Sedition act, which provided for fines or imprisonment of individuals who criticized the government, in speech or print.
