Asa Phillip Randolph
|
|
|
Asa Philip Randolph was born April 15, 1889 in Crescent
City, Florida, one of two sons of Reverend James William and
Elizabeth Robinson Randolph, both descendants of slaves.
Asa Randolph’s father was an educated minister of an African
Methodist Episocopalian (AME)church, that was already widely
known as a meeting place and melting pot for black politics
from as far back as the eighteen-hundreds. Later Randolph
and his family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he
excelled in his studies at the Cookman Institute (the first
high school for African-American’s in Florida) After
graduation and with no funds for college Randolph was forced
to enter the work force, later in 1911 Randolph would
relocate and find himself in Harlem, New York. During this
time Randolph found himself in a virtual melting pot with a
mixture a black Americans from the south migrating north and
many European immigrants arriving every day Harlem was
becoming overcrowded and mostly unemployed.
