A WAR OF WORDS
Books, films, music and works of art have been suppressed, altered, bleeped, cut and burned. Writers and artists have been imprisoned, fined, fired, or silenced. Do some of us really want all this to continue? Picture this. It’s a summer afternoon in a small town. A boy comes home with a CD by Iron Maiden and his father throws it away because it has “disgusting lyrics.” You may be thinking that this argument is between a father and son and doesn’t concern you. But this incident is just one example of a controversial issue that affects us all. I think that his father should of given it a chance because it’s not all bad. Also it doesn’t mean that the child would do the things that some of the songs talk about. The argument about songs with explicit lyrics has two sides. One side is that these songs often have an important message and that young people should be able to make their own decisions about what to listen to. Most kids probably would support this side. The other side is that the swearing, racism, and violence toward authority and especially toward women in the songs is a bad influence on children.
