For decades Americans have been convinced that the game of baseball exhibits many the nation’s ideals. ... Contrary to popular belief in American society, baseball is neither wholesome nor fair. ... Numerous myths have disseminated through the generations of baseball fans. Some evolve themselves, and others are perpetrated by baseball heads, but few are true. These myths include, but are not limited to, the belief that Abner Doubleday invented the game of baseball and that those involved are always decent and fair people. These myths have lead to a common misconception about America’s pastime.
Foremost of these myths is the misconception that baseball is completely of American origin. ... Spalding, an ex-ballplayer himself, tried to convince American baseball fans that the game was invented by Abner Doubleday, although several stick and ball games had been played for decades before baseball became the game known today.
The most immediate predecessor of baseball, which many credit as the original baseball game, was a British game called rounders. ... With such similarities to baseball, it is hard to imagine how someone could try to convince the American public that the game was native. ... Other countries, too, had stick and ball games that were precursors to American baseball. ... With all these games being played, some maybe even as early as 1800’s, it is obvious that the idea that baseball is American in origin is just a myth. ... In Spalding’s 1903 Baseball Guide, baseball historian and writer Henry Chadwick wrote and became the first to publicly claim that baseball had most decidedly descended from the British game of rounders. Spalding was furious at this, and in the Baseball Guide of 1905 proposed that a commission be formed to investigate the origins of baseball. ... It was the commission’s findings that Abner Doubleday had invented the game of baseball by improving townball while going to school in Cooperstown, New York. ... Also, baseball was never mentioned in any of diaries that Doubleday kept. ...
This is the most blatant hoax that baseball has perpetrated on the American public. Although many of baseball’s myths are just misconceptions that have been passed down through the generations to where they are accepted as fact, this false claim was created primarily by one man and the truth covered up by those in charge. ... This lays the foundation for numerous myths and misconceptions about a game believed to be wholesome, fair and American.
Apart from its supposed national origins, another common misconception among baseball fans is that the game is fair. While this may be the case for the actual playing of the game, little in its past suggests that baseball has been fair to the players. This unfair treatment of player is especially evident in the early stages of professional baseball. From racism to the reserve clause to the actions of Andrew Freedman, the mistreatment of baseball players is well documented.
