Calling the First Crusade
It seems that the first Crusade was a direct outcome of the Peace of God and The Truce of God movements; it is evident that they were already in effect when Pope Urban II delivered his message at Clermont in Auvergne, in November, 1095. They were the platform for his discourse and appeals that finally led to the first Crusade. ... So in his speech the pope called for what in the Muslim religion is called a “Jihad” or “Holy War,” A “War of the Cross,” or Crusade, to recapture the holy lands from the unbelievers.
Using a remarkable gift of eloquence, Urban II first made a preamble before going to the point he intended to go.
