... ” Voltaire’s Candide could easily be an attempt to answer what state the minds of the people around him were in. ... Immanuel Kant wrote: “Do we live in an enlightened age? ... ” In Voltaire’s Candide, we are able to see what the character Candide thinks of this world, and whether or not he believes the statement that Kant so boldly makes. After all of Candide’s adventures of seeing different parts of the world, one might come to the conclusion that Candide would be able to accurately respond to Kant’s statement. Surprisingly it seems that Candide might have to disagree with Kant. ... It would be unfair to make an argument of Candide’s view on Kant’s statement without selecting different encounters he faces throughout his journey, so the following are selected incidents to help prove Candide’s view on the his present world.
Candide comes across a “beautiful meadow interlaced with streams” (68). While sitting down preparing a meal, Candide and Cacambo hear cries from what seem to be women’s voices. ... Candide takes his rifle and shoots the two monkeys to attempt to save the two ladies from these wild monkeys.
