Canadian Battle of Vimy Ridge

While Canadians will forever remember the battle of Vimy Ridge as their victorious moment of the First World War, one battle of the Second World War has provoked humiliation, sadness, and controversy among Canadians for the last 60 years. That battle was the raid on Dieppe (code named Operation Jubilee), an Allied attack on a city on the coast of Normandy occupied by German soldiers. The raid cost the lives of many young Canadians, and damaged the morale of Canadian citizens during these times of despair. ... But, because of poor planning, the battle would not be a success for the Allies, but rather a shameful loss. ... The plan of attack was extremely detailed, created by the Canadian Planning Staff at Force Headquarters, and was to be a very large scale raid. ... It did not properly prepare the young, inexperienced soldiers for the battle. ...
Dieppe was not just a failure in respect of the Allies’ positioning during the war, it also dented Canadian morale. ... The Canadian newspapers also propagated this lie. On August 20, 1942, the headline in The Globe and Mail, a Toronto newspaper, read, "Canadian soldiers come home singing." This title suggests that the Canadian soldiers had had success with Dieppe, which was not true. ... Canadians now began to ask questions: Why had officials said that the raid was a success when so many Canadian men had died? ... The feeling of sadness changed quickly to a feeling of bitterness among Canadian citizens and soldiers towards those who had planned the raid. ... The Canadian soldiers blamed their officers for having sent them to such a dangerous battle. Prior to the battle, the morale of the soldiers and the general public had been good. Canadian newspapers had originally taken the view that Dieppe was a success.
