... Calhoun presented his views in A Disquisition on Government on the imperfections that arose in the Constitution of the United States. ... To fix the problem Calhoun proposed a number of reforms that would better represent the entire population while also preventing a single group in the future from gaining supreme power over the land. Although the problem was a practical one, the reforms Calhoun proposed were as biased as they were unrealistic. Had his proposals been carried out they would have only complicated the situation between the North and South, and had they been in existence today democracy would be nearly impossible.
The problem Calhoun was attempting to conquer was relatively simple. ...
