COMPARISON OF FRENCH AND AMERICAN REVOLUTIONS
1) Gentz believed that the American and French Revolutions were very different. The American Revolution had a clear set of goals, which was to have representative government under the rule of law. ... In contrast, he felt that the French Revolution did not tear down, or overthrow the aristocracy with a clear set of goals in mind, but was a revolution without any boundaries, not under the rule of law, and one which would lead to anarchy.
I think that the revolutions had more in common the Gentz believed. ...
2) I think that the American Revolution reflected the ideas of Locke, which is that a social contract existed between the government and the people to the extent that government was to secure the needs and rights of the people, and that if it couldn’t its overthrow justifiable.
