Many people, after being told of the genocide and enslavement of the people of the Bahamas, assume that Christopher Columbus was a bloodthirsty villain, greedy and bent on destruction. ... To us in the year 2003, his actions sound atrocious and Columbus has even been compared to Hitler. ... Also, Columbus actions against the natives were not purely his own concepts. The Spanish crown had an agenda of colonization and spreading Christianity, and used Christopher Columbus as a representative of the interests of the Spanish monarchy.
Many of Columbus actions were ordered by the King and Queen of Spain. Christopher Columbus was not an entrepreneur who exploited the natives for wealth. ... Columbus would not have spoken so well of them if his only intention was to put them to work and use them out of greed. ... Columbus, and the Spanish monarchy, probably did not see the natives as having the same amount of awareness and ability to comprehend as they did.
