clair of assissi

Clare of Assisi was a disciple of St. Francis and member of the Franciscan order. As a true believer of the Franciscan order, Clare lived her life in total dedication to Jesus Christ, and the teachings of St. Francis. Clare of Assisi had an impact on the formation of St. Francis’s spiritual daughters first community, the order of Poor Ladies. As a direct result of the order of Poor Ladies, St. Francis created a second community, the Poor Clares. Clare was appointed abbess of the Poor Clares, and maintained that position for forty years. Clare contributed to maintaining the true beliefs of the Franciscan order by rejecting the offers from several different popes to give up the life of absolute poverty. As a woman of great devotion to Jesus Christ a life of absolute poverty, and the Franciscan order, Clare of Assisi was not only a hero, but also a Saint. Clare of Assisi was born on July 16, 1194, in Assisi Italy. Clare was raised in a wealthy family. Her father was count Sasso-Rasso a representative of a ancient Roman family who owned a large palace in Assisi and a castle on Mount Subasio. As well as having a wealthy father, Clare’s mother belonged to the noble family of Fiumi, and often flaunted her status as nobility. Clare of Assisi was said to be very religious and spiritual as a younger child. When Clare became older, she turned away from worldly things and possessions. At the age of eighteen, Clare heard St. Francis speak at the church of San Giorgio at Assisi. St. Francis words inspired Clare to go to him and ask him to help her live a life after the manner of the holy Gospel. St. Francis recognized that Clare was destined by God to influence people in the ways of Jesus Christ, and the Franciscan Order.
