While Bryan, a charismatic orator, made hundreds of speeches, McKinley appealed to the public personally and one-on-one. Bryan’s campaign centered on the controversial issue of silver, which essentially left him with a one-issue platform. By narrowing his issues down to one, he restricted the amount of support for his party.
