The Real Columbus
All through elementary and middle school, I was taught that Christopher Columbus was one of the great heros of history. ... In my mind, in fact, I always thought of Columbus as the first American. ... Columbus was used as the example of what we should all strive to become. ... To understand who Columbus really was, one must look at the age in which he lived. Columbus was a man of his era, the 15th century, the time of the Reconquest in Spain. ... However, as Konig points out, “even in that religious and bigoted age, Columbus stood out as a very fierce Catholic.” This could be viewed as Columbus merely being a product of his time, but there was more to his religious fervor than one might originally think.
