Comparision of Speeches

Patrick Henry's speech to the Virginia Convention and Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence were both very influential in their time because they sparked controversy about a most important issue in the colonies, independence from Great Britain. They were both very passionate in their ideas and hoped to persuade the people of the colonies to see their point of view. This was accomplished though many literary techniques, also with their very passionate oral presentation of their viewpoint. Each presentation has its positives and negatives and similarities and differences from one another. The purpose of their writing was to persuade the American people to join their cause of American independence. Patrick Henry held nothing back when he addressed delegates from Virginia on his views about independence, he appealed to the delegates emotions with his powerful speech. "Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country." He also stated, "The war is actually begun!" Also, "I know not what course others may take; but as for me -- give me liberty or give me death!" These quotations were used to try and convince the people in attendance to see his point of view.
