During the 15th and 16th century, Europe was ravaged by countless numbers of wars and appalling acts of violence. Although a great variety of classes of people suffered from these atrocities, the ones who were mostly disturbed were the peasants. Not only were their status the lowest of the low, but they were impacted the most by the devastation. Consequently, they must have something to release the strain and to alleviate the suffering; they do this by having festivals and performing rituals. The celebration of Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) is the climax of the carnivals, which began as early as January. Shrove, derived from "shrive," refers to the confession of sins usual in the European Middle Ages as a preparation for Lent, the 40-day period of fasting. Shrove Tuesday ultimately acquired the nature of a carnival or festival in European countries, and many customs developed in connection with this day that precedes the beginning of the Lenten fast.
