THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
The Civil Rights Movement is probably the best known issue of the African American history; it is for that reason that it requires special attention and a detailed analysis. ... The Civil Rights Movement is not a movement that started all of a sudden, the Civil Rights Revolution is the culmination of all the social and political events happening after the Second World War. ... Philip Randolpf and Bayard Rustin, the March on Washington is the event that would come to symbolize the Civil Rights Movement. ... “Bloody Sunday received national attention… President Johnson gave a rousing speech to congress concerning civil rights as a result of Bloody Sunday, and passed the Voting Rights Act within that same year” . This could be the last historical event concerning the Civil Rights Movement, but as I said at the beginning of the paper, the Civil Rights Movement is a Revolution without a concrete starting date which is still going on.
As a result of this brief history of the Movement, we can see that the whole black community participates in it; even white citizens play an important role in the Civil Rights Revolution. ... The Civil Rights Revolution was a movement that concerned everybody, every member of the black community with no difference of class or social status. ... In terms of class, during the Civil Rights Movement, we can distinguish between the elites and upper-middle class blacks who played an important role in the legal aspects of the revolution and had important leadership roles; and the working class who made any demonstration, any march and any meeting possible. ... These were people with studies that saw the Civil Rights Movement as something that had to be solved in a legal and non-violent way. ... The fight for the Civil Rights was a fight that didn’t distinguish between males and females. Plenty of black women played a relevant role within the movement, the activism of these women increases, especially in the Southern states, “…the disproportionate presence and importance of women in the Southern movement” . ... Her commitment to the civil rights caused her to lose her home and job” , Gloria Richardson, Jo Ann Robinson who founded the Montgomery Improvement Association, Daisy Bates who played an important role in the Little Rock Central High School affair, Angela Davis in the S. ...
At the same time, besides well-known black women, there were a lot of unknown African American females that fought for the Civil Rights in a more uncovered way, marching in the demonstrations, being in meetings, wearing the African American hair style, and so on. Even though the African American men played the main roles in the Civil Rights Movement, there is no doubt that black women participated actively and with important roles in the fight for Civil Rights. ... Religion has been always an important part in the African American history, and the period of the Civil Rights revolution is not an exception. During the Movement, in the United States there were a lot of religions, but for this analysis I am going to make a big distinction in the African American community between the Nation of Islam and other religions: Jews, Protestants, Baptists…
On one hand, the Nation of Islam with his “messenger” Elijah Muhammad was a “religion of protest and rebellion, which [preached] black union against the white man” .
