Canada's National Identity
Early Canada was a vast sparsely inhabited wilderness, and people had little sense of a collective identity. The nationhood of the Europeans that settled here was based on the existence of a community sharing a common language. When massive numbers of immigrants arrived in Canada a wide diversification of languages and cultures developed, and Canada adopted the self-image of a “cultural mosaic”. This has remained an accurate description of Canada through the years. Today, Canada is still a multicultural society, full of people of many different ethnicities from many different backgrounds. Bilingualism and multiculturalism are very important to our national identity.
