King’s letter is written in response to a public statement by Birmingham clergymen who opposed the demonstration King was leading against the city’s segregated transportation system. The letter gradually boils more and more fervent and passionate, but the pot never overflows; King keeps his cool, so to speak. ... Had he jumped straight into using such painful examples as finding “your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can’t go to the public amusement park…and see tears welling up in her eyes when she is told that Funtown in closed to colored children” in the first or second paragraph, the letter would not have the same affect as it does; it would be too difficult to read, too uncomfortable, and it is possible that the clergymen who received this letter might have skimmed it to find his point, rather than being able to see it within the example.
