There are many distinctive reasons why the New England and Chesapeake regions had developed so differently by 1700, even though they both were settled by English people. ... The New England colonies were mostly settled by Puritan families that and immigrated as an entire family; while the Chesapeake colonies were settled by a large majority of men. The leadership from the beginning was stronger in the New England area, while the leadership in the Chesapeake only became strong after it was a life or death situation. Finally, the struggles over everyday life were not as hard as they were in the Chesapeake colonies.
Because the New England colonies were mostly settled by Puritan families who immigrated as entire families, there was a relatively equal number of men and women, Document B. ...
