... The area by the Chesapeake Bay was colonized for the most part because settlers saw what they thought was a lucrative business in farming and gold mining and jumped on it. The area of New England, however, was established as a way of fleeing England’s religious laws. Although both originated from the same country, the two regions of New England and the Chesapeake formed completely different societies over the few years they were separated.
New England had grown into an area were God was king. ... Politically, they began setting up doctrines by which to live by, and although the colonies of New England didn’t set up a real government, most did have a governor (usually a strong member of the church) and a body of citizens that would decide laws and determine punishments.
