A Day At The Races
We left for the great Circus Maximus at dawn. This was because our house was situated roughly ten miles from Rome. My two slaves accompanied me to the Circus along with my wife, all are hearts were pounding at the thought of a day at the races.
As we neared the great Circus, we began to make out thousands upon thousands of spectators who lined the rim of this magnificent structure. The four of us had been saved great seats by my merchant friend Gaius Apollinaris who I was in business with. ... The sights and sounds of the Circus were extraordinary. ...
Along the central axis of the great Circus were mounted statues and there were also seven eggs that could be moved to represent the seven laps that were in each race. The first race of the day was only for experienced racers because the horses would become nervous due to the loud and colourful opening procession.
The second race of the day was the pedibus ad quadrigam in which Martial Consentius was racing and also running in. ... This race was the seventh of the day and his next race was number thirteen, which was after the break for lunch at midday. ... The chariots burst through the starting gates at the northern end of the Circus and were away. ... He was starting to whip the back of Martial and I knew this because my seat was on the front row of the Circus and I could make out large blood red stains on his back. ... A group of soldiers came on to the track and helped him off the course and as they were doing so, Martial waved to the crowd to show them that he was still conscious which caused the great crowd to cheer.
