Settlers of the New England and Chesapeake regions were both of English descent, yet the ways in which their colonies rose to success were quite different. ... New England became a safe haven for Separatists fleeing religious persecution in England. John Winthrop, governor of Massachusetts wished to establish a model Christian society in which the colony would be a utopian alternative to old England (Doc A) . It was their strong beliefs and reasons for fleeing England, that the people of New England established a faith-based society. ... The main purpose of the New England colonies was to establish a stable society far away from England under religious law and order.
