Settlers of the New England and Chesapeake regions were both of English descent, yet the ways in which their colonies rose to success were quite different. ... The differences in religion, government, and family structure were evident and it was these differences that contributed to their success or downfall.
New England became a safe haven for Separatists fleeing religious persecution in England. John Winthrop, governor of Massachusetts wished to establish a model Christian society in which the colony would be a utopian alternative to old England (Doc A) . It was their strong beliefs and reasons for fleeing England, that the people of New England established a faith-based society. ... The main purpose of the New England colonies was to establish a stable society far away from England under religious law and order.
