By the eve of the revolution, the colonists were still searching for their true identity. They could not truly unify themselves as Americans until they had completely severed themselves from Britain. Many felt that they were British, and people of all descendants blended into one. Also, the Americans understood the need for unity, but they did not have a cohesive complaint. Because of these reasons, the Americans were keeping themselves from true unity. Many people are wondering who is this American? What is he like? Some, on the other hand, thought they already had the answer. The colonists still felt tied to Britain. Many considered themselves British. In one of his many works, Peter Oliver wrote “We [Saw] a Set of Men...under the auspices of the english Government: & protected by it...for a long Series of Years...rising, by easy Gradations, to such a State of Prosperity and Happiness, & burst into an open rebellion against that Parent, who protected then against the Ravages of their Enemies.” In this statement he is complaining that so many events have occurred so quickly in the past years that there has been no time for an emotional separation.
