On July 28, 1905 the Daily Mirror printed a pencil sketch cartoon caricaturing a meeting between Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany that had taken place only five days earlier. This documentary analysis aims to place this cartoon in its historical context, comment upon the representations and illusions within it and summarise its value to a student of modern European history.
The meeting of the Kaiser and the Tsar took place on Sunday evening, July 23, 1905 aboard the Kaiser’s yacht near Bjorko Sound. ... The public was put on edge by this meeting as even the Kaiser noted, “After my arrival I soon found out through reading the press reports… that a very strong current of mistrust and apprehension had been engendered against my visit, especially from England” (Fay 69). ...
For a period Germany’s prestige or position did not wane, despite conflicting statements on the part of the Tsar as to where his allegiance was, and miscalculated comments about his intentions towards expansion (Fay 51). ... But, as new members came to his staff, the Kaiser’s policy began to be regarded in a more sinister light both by diplomats of other powers and the public. ... This was the last straw for the Kaiser. ... Alliances were working against Germany, and the Kaiser was fully aware. ... The first was a secret intrigue with the Tsar of Russia. ...
