Booker T. Washington vs. W.E.B. Du Bois At the turn of the century two prominent African-American leaders clashed ideology. Both men were giants in the debate over the best course for the advancement of the Negro race. Passionate about their beliefs they were practicly rivals. In truth both ideologies found their place in current society, but only Booker T. Washington had the correct plan for the time period. Booker T. Washington’s superior approach to Negro advancement is perhaps the primary reason Black education was jump-started. Washington advocated schooling as a way to economic equality. In his famous Atlanta Compromise Address he implored his fellow Negroes to “cast down your bucket where you are.” Washington insisted that the black community be educated. Hopefully this would lead to the casting down of their social and economic ‘buckets’ for good.
