The Perfect Woman of 1873 There are many different components that contribute to the overall discourse of “American-ness.” These include the fast food, baseball, Democracy, freedom, and the quintessential American Dream. An element of what defines “American-ness” that can not be ignored is the perpetual fixation of women on beauty and the efforts of women to reach the ideology of what it is to be beautiful. This ad conveys the obsession with beauty and the perfect body has always been a concern of many American women. It shows the American womens fixation on the ideology of what it means to be beautiful. This fixation has fed a market for millions of products whose purpose is to fix, accentuate, and bind the female body. During the 1870’s disease, moths, and other skin irritations made “miracle lotions” a key commodity of the time. These lotions claim to rid a person of all their dermatological woes with one solution. The corset typically made of whalebone and fabric squeezed the waist to an extremely petit size, making the wearer appear waif thin. This fashionable accessory very often caused irreversible damage. These three advertised products exemplify the American women’s obsession with beauty and the effort to achieve perfection. This obsession with idealistic good looks is a key element in what defines “American-ness.” These three advertisements were taken from the June 28, 1873 edition of Harpers Bazar.
