Is There A Family? In the article “Is There a Family,” social scientists with different theories cover many important issues. The work of Bronislow Malinowski, an anthropologist studying the aborigines in Australia was a great inspiration for many socialists. Malinowski helped convince that The Family was a universal institution, which was the same throughout the world. He stated that the Universal Family was a bounded set of people who recognized one another and who were distinguishable from other like groups, a definite physical space, a hearth and home; and a particular set of emotions, family love. Though as time went on, different theorists with different ideas began to examine Malinowski’s theory. Theorists began asking questions such as “why do so many social thinkers continue to believe in Capital Letter Families as universal institutions,” and “whether anthropological tradition offers any alternatives to a necessary and natural view of what our families are.” In other words, were there any traditional ideas of the family system that could help explain new alternative type of families in the world that did not fit in the “traditional” definition of family?
