DBQ

During the 1500’s, Spain dominated the exploration of the New World. England, wanting to establish colonies in North America, founded colonies in the New England and Chesapeake regions beginning in 1607. Though people of English origin established both areas, the two regions evolved into two distinct societies by the 1700’s due to major differences in their motivations, their demographics, and the diversity of their governments. The settlers of the New England and the Chesapeake regions ventured to the New World for diverse reasons. John Winthrop stated that the Massachusetts Bay Colony “shall be as a city upon a hill” to act as an example for the rest of the world. (Doc. A) The colonists in the New England area, which includes Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut, had a common vision to compel others to strive to be the best they could be for their God. In the north, the towns were centrally organized around the church. As an example, Document D states that the civilians of Springfield, Massachusetts agreed to locate a preacher as soon as one was made available.
