Early Greece

What can be inferred about early Greek civilization is largely based on the writings of Homer and the discovery of the cities of Troy and Mycenae on the island of Crete by archeologist Heinrich Schliemann in the 19th century. The writings of both Homer and Hesiod at the end of the Dark Ages (750-725 BC) can tell historians a lot about the time and events during early Greek history. It is through their stories that historians can interpret the past and understand the roles and functions in early Greek society. ... Meanwhile, the Linear B type, which is a later form of Mycenaean origin, resembles more of a Greek dialect and is translatable, thus enabling us to understand the past of early Greek society. ... The story of the Iliad is a representation of Homeric Greece in which the social and political organizations of the time were small autonomous units, or chiefdoms. ... ”5
The epic stories provide evidence of polytheistic religious beliefs and practices during the early Greek civilization. ... ”6
Hesiod, another poet of the late Dark Ages, or the Early Archaic Period, writes of a new moral order of “justice” regarding the separation of the upper aristocratic class and the lower commoner class.
