World War I stands as a watershed event in the course of world history and in the uncontested international dominance of the European Great Powers. The war had many underlying causes; according to the text, Society, State, and Nation in Twentieth Century Europe by Roderick Phillips, the First World War was based on long-term political conflicts between states. ... 1
During the course of the war, propaganda became a very resourceful tool in boosting peoples’ opinions about defending their native country. The Phillips text notes, “Extensive use of propaganda, censorship, and political repression to this end was further evidence of state activity and the marshalling of all resources for total war in democratic societies.”2 It became increasingly difficult to find objective sources for documenting the war, as newspapers, artworks, and official government documents were tampered with by each respective European government. ... 3 In addition to this, political debate and discussion of the causes of war and the merits of continuing it were discouraged and quashed outright in countries such as Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia, as governments tried to maintain national unity. ... 5 The only sources that truly captured the tumultuous atmosphere on the battlefields were the diaries and poetry of the soldiers. This paper will argue that the poetry of the First World War was the most accurate of all the sources that were available, as the majority of the works were free of propaganda, captured the true feelings of the soldiers on the battlefields and in the trenches, and described the physical settings in a blunt and truthful manner.
