Jacqueline Jones in this article places the southern home front during upcoming trials in America in the context of the Civil War and the reconstruction efforts that followed. Jones compares the relationship between the federal government and the southern states between the times of the Civil War through the time of the New Deal and demonstrates the complexities that were involved during this period as well as managing to prove that one of the great ironies of the Civil War is that the white south, even after it was defeated in 1865, still managed to wage a very successful crusade against the incursion of federal authority in the southern states.
This article comments on essays written previously by Hickel and Keith in which they, along with Jones, highlight the ongoing efforts of the people and governmental bodies throughout the south to circumvent the authority of the federal government. Jones also maintains that there was an ever-present struggle between southern blacks and whites and amongst the rich and the poor throughout the time of reconstruction.
