There were many reasons for the demise of the Republic of Rome. The change from traditional, ancient ways of Roman government and society to the more republican institutions played a key point in the downfall of the Republic. After the First Punic War new innovations put a strain on the constitution and traditions to such a degree, that the existence of the Republic was threatened. ... If the social conflict between the rich and poor was not bad enough, the Second Punic War wiped out almost the entire Roman army. It became known as the worst defeat in the history of Roman military. ... They repeatedly overpowered the Roman legions and overran all of Southern Italy before being trounced. ... The fall of peasant status in Rome made it harder to recruit soldiers, and individuals were less reliable. ... Politics in the Republic changed, as this was the first political bloodshed.
