Freedom

Today America is griped with a new revolution that has been in the work for over three decades. It is a revolution that displaces everything that this country was started on. It is a revolution that pits race against race. It is a fight of hypocrisy that destroys all that minorities have worked for since the founding of America. Today people are more interested in promoting their race more than their patriotism. This is not a battle of cultural pluralism vs. assimilation. It is a battle of being American vs. hiding behind your race. Webster’s dictionary defines race as “any group or class of persons.” Are we not all Americans? It is this revolution within American society that may cause disuniting of over two hundred years of progress. Today race is being used as a weapon by whites as well as minorities. Whether as a shield to hide behind, or as a weapon for progress, Americans have come to use their race in combination with history as a weapon. Such respected liberals like Arthur Schlesinger and others like David Rieff have come to see this disuniting of America. It is witnessed in such places like Los Angles and other American cities have become battlegrounds for this new revolution. From the LA Riots, to the OJ Simpson trial, to everyday life in LA, people have witnessed how this revolution is striking the very foundation of our nation. To understand this revolution one must understand its beginnings. Prior to the nineteen sixties immigrants either strived to assimilate into society or hide in ethnic enclaves. Either way they were mainstreamed into society in a certain extent. After the Second World War America began to progress even further than it already had. In nineteen sixty it elected its first Roman Catholic president. Kennedy was a young liberal who saw America for what it was and what it had done. A huge advocator of civil rights, Kennedy and his liberal policies began to address the wrongs of American history. This liberal idea, which was morally and socially right, began a domino effect on the culture of America that is still being felt today. This liberal climate of the sixties led to groups such as UFW (United Farm Workers), AIM (American Indian Movement), and the Pan-Asian spirit.
