fall of Singapore

|
In 1819 Sir Stamford Raffles, the British East Indian administrator, established by treaty with the sultan of Johore the port settlement of Singapore, which became the centre of British colonial activity in Southeast Asia. In 1832 Singapore became the administrative seat for the Straits Settlements, which comprised Singapore, Penang, Malacca (Melaka), and Labuan and which became a British crown colony in 1867. After World War I the British built a large naval base at Singapore that came to symbolize British power in Southeast Asia.
To Australians in 1941 the Singapore Naval Base represented the shield with which the Royal Navy protected the northern approaches to Australia should it ever be threatened by ships of an Asian navy.
