Leslie Wolf 2/24/03 World History Essay Mayan Civilization Focus Question: How did religion play a role in the Mayan way of everyday life? "
and the Maya had a very great number of idols and temples which were magnificent in their own fashion and besides the community temples, the lords, priests and leading men also had oratories and idols in their houses where they made their prayers and offerings in private". These are the words of Bishop Diego de Landa, the second bishop of the Yucatan. This quote shows a good example of how religion played a role in everyday life. Religious leaders even prayed and made sacrifices to their Gods in the privacy of their own homes. The Maya were polytheistic, which means that they prayed to many Gods. Hunab Ku, Itzamną, An Kinchil, and Au Puch were a few of their more prominent, major Gods. The Maya developed an elaborate system of writing known as hieroglyphics, which were usually combined with pictures and art to show actions and was mainly associated with religion. This Mayan art reflected their lifestyle and culture. Another major part of their life showing culture as well as their appreciation to their rulers was their architecture, which was dedicated to their gods and important rulers. Almost every aspect of Mayan life channeled into religion.
