Ferdinand and Isabella created a rich powerful federal state with a high degree of centralised power

To answer this question the meaning of a ‘federal state’ must be analysed. A federal state means several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs. I think that Ferdinand and Isabella created a federal state. By the time of Ferdinand’s death in 1516, Castile and Aragon were united in religion and foreign policy. They were also united as Ferdinand and Isabella ruled both states although Aragon was somewhat neglected as Ferdinand spent under seven years visiting it out of a thirty-seven year reign. ... Castile and Aragon became the federal state of Spain during Ferdinand and Isabella’s reign.
I think that to decide whether Ferdinand and Isabella created a rich federal state, we must look at the economy of Castile and Aragon. ... However, the silver and gold coming into Spain from the New World masked the poor state of the economy. This provided Ferdinand and Isabella with a source of income, which was used in several wars such as the civil war in Castile, the war against the Moors in Granada and the conquests in north eastern Africa. ... This is shown by the debts accumulated by Spain to foreign bankers and the bankruptcies of the state in 1557, 1560, 1576 and 1596. Therefore, although Spain was reasonably affluent during Ferdinand and Isabella’s reign, their poor management of the economy damaged the prosperity of Spain in later years. The apparent wealth of Spain throughout the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella added to the prestige and power of Spain.
Throughout Ferdinand and Isabella’s reign, Spain became very powerful. At the beginning of the reign, the monarchs had to deal with civil war, as not everyone was happy with Isabella’s accession in Castile.
