The problem I have been faced with is, that over the past ten years, the global community has granted greater recognition to various indigenous cultures. I have looked at the problems that the Penan communities in Ulu Baram have faced and that of the Aborigines of Australia, and have found this problem to be wrong and that the global community has granted little to no rights to indigenous cultures.
These days only about 10,000 Indigenous Penan remain in Sarawak and very few of them are able enough to carry out there normal, nomadic lifestyle. ... But this problem arose when the government did not recognize the indigenous peoples rights to their lands and their resources. ... For years the Penan have been rebelling against the large-scale logging that has been happening around them, mainly by widespread blockading of the roads leading to the forest. The Sarawak state government has the complete right to issue permits to logging companies or to undertake development schemes.
