As Source B says the actions of some of the strikers, and to some extent the trade unions in general during the general strike were extra-constitutional. Whether this was their intent or not the opportunity was there for a coup attempt and some right wing thinkers of the time believed the trade union leaders had this end in mind. ... It also claims the unions intent was to supersede parliament and to override the will of the people, in other words to enact a socialist revolution. The red scares of this period had made many people vehemently anti-communist and it was easy to blame the general strike on the agitation of the socialists. It is true that some Trade Union Leaders were Marxists for example the miners leader A. ... Cook however there were more factors to the development of the general strike than just socialism and so the aim of the trade union leaders is unclear.
The government propaganda at the time denounced the strike as illegal they claimed that for the 4 million employed in the vital services of the country to enforce their will upon the other 42 million through a strike is unjust and unconstitutional and they compared it to the workers holding the nation to ransom. ... But, it says the general strike is not the same and is no longer acceptable or constitutional. The implication although not very clear in the source is that there must be a more militant agenda driving the general strike.
The leaders were sometimes agitatory and confrontational in nature and certainly they showed an unwillingness to comprimise with the mine-owners. ... The miners got assurance of support from the General Unions Council before taking any action, which hints that they were trying to force the government into accepting a resolution in their favour. This could easily have been construed as revolutionary.
There were some developments during the strike which would have been worrying for people at the time . The main example is the printing press incident, the Daily Mail was forced to close down after the printers refused to print a front page article particuarily attacking the strike .
