Even though one of the Union army’s main goals was to end slavery, they had almost no respect for the free blacks that were soldiers. One major issue in the movie is the men’s feet. They do not have good shoes so their feet are bloody and scalded. Colonel Shaw put in an order for shoes a while back but never received them. When he takes action and goes to the store, the owner tells him they don’t have shoes. He is boiling mad and begins knocking things around and because of his force, they are finally given the shoes. Another showing of the white men’s disrespect is when it comes time for them to be paid.
