What exactly constitutes being labeled a “Great American President”? ... Presidents such as Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson have been historically deemed as “great American presidents”, but upon further examination into the lives of these “great” presidents, many people have begun to wonder if they are truly “great” or were they in fact “flawed public servants”. Jefferson, a great believer in human rights profited from the institution of slavery. ... Many historians believe Lincoln was probably the most unconstitutional president in American history. ... ” Was Jefferson such a great advocate for human rights after all? ...
Andrew Jackson, president from 1829-1837, played a central role in opening up the early American frontier in the first decades of the 19th century. ... He fought single-handedly to advance American territorial expansion along the southern border. ... He did all these great things for “the people”, yet considered only Americans as “people. ... As American citizens, we demand that our leaders follow the constitution. With all the facts that have come to light through the course of time, we are left to wonder if Abraham Lincoln did follow the basic laws of our country and are left to ponder if he really was as “great” as we have been taught to believe. ... Many of the American people firmly believe that he committed perjury, and lied to the American People under a sacred oath. ... ” Had he shown the traits of a great leader at the outset and admitted that he had experimented in his youth, I think he would have showed traits more becoming of a true American Leader. ... He left the country then marched against the actions of the US and protested American policy when he was in Europe.
We question what makes a leader great, and what traits are important in a great American President. ... While the debates raged over Jefferson, Jackson, and Lincoln at the times of their presidencies, we have been taught without question, that these were “Great Presidents”. ... The tarnish of the negatives against a Presidents image has worn off. ... Will he ever be looked upon as a “Great” President?
