hello

The Cathedral First published in 1981, “The Cathedral” by Raymond Carver is a minimalist short story centered around a domestic situation involving the interaction between an ordinary couple and their blind guest. The underlying themes of this story are alienation, the desire for a more spiritual life, and the feeling that we never quite reach our full potential and often have hidden talents that we never knew about. Raymond Carver’s "Cathedral," a story that has something important to say about both prejudice and lack of communication, does not hesitate in the least to begin revealing several characteristics of the nameless narrator. In fact, the nameless narrator reveals things about himself in the first paragraph. Three of the more dominant characteristics are his stereotypical attitude, his jealousy, and a weakness in his relationship with his wife due to lack of communication. As the story progresses, the narrator makes a couple of realizations which lead to an unexpected ending. These realizations cause the character to change his attitude and therefore be a round character, which I will prove by the end of this paper. From the very first, the narrator’s stereotypical attitude towards his wife’s long-time friend is revealed by his remarks. Bub states, "My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed" (Carver 38). This statement gives us the first sense of his stereotype toward the blind (Carver 38).
