(Harr 93) Although these individual rights are guaranteed in the Constitution to every citizen, horrific and inhumane hate crimes still exist in society today because some people perceive homosexuality as a threat. ... Russell, a hate crime is a crime motivated by prejudice against a social group. (Dictionary) Although hate crimes are directed towards several different groups of people, those against gays and lesbians have been seen as the most acceptable form of hate crimes in society, especially among young adults and teenagers. ... Franklin states that the hatred that leads to these crimes comes from a person’s “negative beliefs and attitudes about homosexuality that they perceive other people in the community share.” A person commits a hate crime because he or she believes that he or she is “enforcing social morals” and also sees these crimes as a way to “prove toughness and heterosexuality” to the rest of society and peers.
