It is said that the powwow started 400 years ago when a group of four Omaha brothers who were warriors came home victorious from a battle or raid. The dancers where called gGrass Dancersh, and the powwow itself derived from the Omaha Dances as they were called. A powwow consists of dance, song, and celebration. ...
Although the powwow started 400 years ago, its history came to an abrupt end in 1890 when Indian dances were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
