In early America, the issue of westward expansion was one that ruled the political agendas of the era. ... It became one of the most important questions raised in American history, and it led to many changes in multiple aspects of life in the United States. Although many believed that westward expansion would promote unity among the people of America, by 1860 it had become apparent that it promoted sectionalism; this institution would eventually lead to the failure of the union that is known as the Civil War. ... But with this expansion came great problems: An overwhelming majority of the people migrating West were southerners, and they wanted to keep their slaves. ...
