The introduction to Conflict and Consensus by Davis and Woodman, explores what students should take away from an in-depth history course. The authors are trying to convey how once students have reached the level of this book, they have entered into a new type of history class. History has become something more than memorizing facts and dates; it is now an imprecise art of interpreting the causes and effects of significant historical events. The authors are trying to use this book to reveal to students how historians form conclusions on past events, and how the students can make opinions of their own as well.
For students entering the course level of this history book, they have entered a different type of history; it is no longer memorizing when events occurred, but why they did. The authors tell us, that for students to truly understand and study history, they must not simply accept that an event happened on a particular date, they must examine why did it happen on that particular day and not any other.
