In 1607, settlers established the first permanent settlement in North America. They called this settlement Jamestown, after King James I. Thirteen years later, men and women seeking religious refuge landed at Plymouth Massachusetts. Both the early New England and Chesapeake colonies were of English decent, but because they had different morals and motives for settling, along with contrary social and political systems, these regions evolved into two distinct societies. When King James I granted a charter to the Virginia Company of London, a joint stock company, to entice settlers to establish a settlement in America, eager English men driven by the prospect of acquiring wealth anxiously accepted the proposal. After hearing of the riches that others were acquiring in the New World, these men wanted to get in on the action, much like their Spanish predecessors. The men bounded for the Chesapeake region acted on impulse, and didn’t have any substantial plans for when they arrived. The only ambition for these men was to find gold. Captain John Smith described the scene as diligent men digging, washing, refining, and loading gold all in silence. (Doc F) The English men of the Virginia Company voyaged to the Chesapeake region with their hearts and minds set on discovering gold and nothing else.
