Hatshepsut (Hatshopsitu)
Reigned 1479 BC-1457 BC (18th Dynasty)
Hatshepsut was the fourth female Pharaoh of Egypt. ... Hatshepsut married her half-brother Thutmose II. When Hatshepsut’s other two brothers died prematurely, she and her husband ascended to the throne. Thutmose II died unexpectedly in 1479BC, leaving behind Hatshepsut, her daughter and a young son (the future Thutmose III) born to a minor woman of the Pharaoh’s harem. Since Thutmose III was too young to rule, Hatshepsut presented herself as regent, taking control of the government. Hatshepsut recruited a group of loyal and influential officers. ... In 1473 BC, with the help of her officials, Hatshepsut crowned herself the sole Pharaoh of Egypt, adopting a Horus name and the full ‘pharaonic regalia’, both of which were usually luxuries reserved for male Pharaohs.
