Mexico 1. Do not refer to yourself as "American." Mexicans will remind you that they are "Americans" too. Demonstrate a keen interest in the history and culture of the great Mexican civilization, or more accurately, civilizations (they are much older than ours.) Mexicans are extremely proud of their complex Indian, European and modern heritages and will be eager to "educate" you. Participate, cooperate and make time (an extra day or two on that business trip) to enjoy and respect your host's efforts. • 2. Go ahead and use your high school Spanish -any effort to speak the language will be hugely rewarded. Mexicans will help you get the words right and will be delighted by your willingness to try. Most Mexican businesspeople speak at least some English; you should at least learn and use some basic Spanish phrases. • 3. Above all, go for the relationship first -- the deal will come later. The Mexican businessperson wants to know who you are before he decides on the business you bring to the table. Socializing inevitably comes first, and it can be a calculated and diplomatic exploration of your professional, education and social credibility. Speak humbly of your status, degree, family background, professional associations and experiences, but speak of them. • 4. You can first meet in a restaurant. Don't expect to talk "deal" until after the coffee. Do not expect to be invited at first to a Mexican's home. You may be invited to discuss further details the next day in the office. Business gifts (not necessary at first), especially those reflecting something personal or to be enjoyed by the family, can be a real asset in a developing relationship, to be given on subsequent visits or at holiday times. • 5. Mexicans can be prompt, but are not ruled by the clock in the same way that North Americans are. Arrive on time, but expect to wait. Do not comment about being kept waiting, and do not do work while waiting. • 6. Make no reference to "Montezuma's Revenge." It is unappreciated. Keep your health to yourself. Water and food are different everywhere, and if you're in Mexico for any length of time, it's probably better to get it and get it over with. Also. the altitude in Mexico City, coupled with sometimes intense pollution, can be very hard on your system. Slow down and be careful. • 7. Mexicans are formal people. They respect and use titles or last names when first introduced. Say "Senor Ingeniero," or "Ingeniero Gomez," but never "Luis" (Ingeniero, Gerente and Licensiado are just some of the titles used in business). Typically the man's last name also includes the name of his mother's family. Refer in person to Jorge Gomez Rodriguez, for example, as "Senor Gomez," his father's family name), but in writing with his full last name, Rodriguez being his mother's maiden name.
