History and Revolution

I’m a bit curious to know how many of you read any of our Howard Zinn book. I’d bet that most of you have barely touched it. I, actually did not pick it up more than a few times this year, up until a few weeks ago when I read the last two chapters of the book and found an interesting argument. Howard Zinn would have you all believe that history greatly understates rebellion, and that the United States in on a course for massive reform. Zinn would first tell you that, by tradition, whoever possesses military strength, wealth, command of official ideology, and cultural control, has power. Then he would go on to say that, measured by these standards, popular rebellion never looks strong enough to survive, but that it really is. Zinn believes that the middle class, the slightly privileged among American society, are “guards” of the American system and that there will soon be a “changing of the guards” in which the people of the United States will unite and rebel against traditional society.
